yumeverse lore
the short version of my yumesona’s lore is this; after the emperor rescue arc, cao cao engages xiahou shala to xun yu, because the incident makes him realise that he can never fully trust xun yu and he wants to have a permanent tie to him. so, with xiahou dun’s consent, cao cao plants his niece as xun yu’s wife, believing that she’ll remain loyal to her family over her husband if the time ever comes (hint: she doesn’t).my yumesona's name is xiahou shala (夏侯纱蜡), and she's xiahou dun’s only daughter. with cao cao and xiahou dun’s closeness, she grew up alongside cao ang, cao pi, cao zhang, and cao zhi and sees them more as brothers than cousins - this is reflected in how she uses brotherly terms with cao cao’s sons.with her mother having died when she was young, xiahou dun was left in charge of raising shala. while she was raised learning traditional women’s skills and manners, xiahou dun also teaches her some martial skills after she gets into a fight with cao ang, beats him, and expresses a desire to learn how to fight for real. while these skills fade a bit when she leaves the xiahou household and no longer has any regular sparring partners she once had (xiahou dun, xiahou yuan, cao pi, cao zhang), she never fully loses her skills. notably, she begins to practice and regain her skills after xiahou dun loses his eye and xun yu is kidnapped within the same year (198). on the other hand, being close with cao zhi, she also develops a love for poetry and literature that xiahou dun allows her to pursue alongside her cousins. she sometimes expresses a desire to fight alongside her father and uncles, but she knows that she’s better off away from the battlefield.of her cousins, she's closest to cao ang (prior to his death) and to cao zhi, who's a few months younger but was born in the same year as her. she also gets along well with cao xiu before he tampers with xun yu’s corpse. while she was close to cao pi and cao zhang growing up, her relationships with them become a bit distant as they all age. she has a strong relationship with xiahou yuan, as well. she doesn't see lady zhen often, but the two get along very well when they do see each other. xiahou mao hasn’t been introduced in RoT, but i imagine him to be older (not by much, only a couple of years) and for them to have a very close relationship - however, this might change if/when xiahou mao is introduced in RoT.while it’s cao cao (officially xiahou dun, but really, cao cao) who proposes the idea of a marriage arrangement to xun gun, xun gun is more than eager to tie his family to the cao clan’s growing power and influence. xiahou shala is resentful towards cao cao for the arranged marriage, as it’s easy for her to figure out why exactly cao cao wanted her to marry xun yu following the emperor’s rescue (196). while xiahou shala knows that her father doesn’t have the same mind for strategy as cao cao, she also knows he isn’t stupid, and is certain that he was let in on cao cao’s plans. despite this, she’s never quite able to resent her father, especially because she sees him supporting han, and therefore her husband, along with supporting cao cao (however, she comes to understand that xiahou dun is supporting han to support cao-wei).xiahou shala spends the first year of her marriage (early 197 - early 198) quickly warming up to xun yu, but because of her resentment towards not just cao cao but the situation as a whole, she struggles to feel any romantic connection to xun yu. this is furthered by how much time xun yu spends on the field - but, they continuously write letters to each other, a habit they got into during their engagement (because of the delicate political implications of the marriage, the xiahou/cao and xun families veered from tradition and introduced xun yu and xiahou shala to one another prior to their official engagement, and xun yu started the back-and-forth chain of letters between them).on the other hand, xun yu took a liking to xiahou shala very quickly, and it doesn’t take him long at all to develop romantic feelings for her. but, for fear of pushing her further away, he gives her space to slowly warm up to him. after xiahou dun loses his eye and xun yu is captured in 198, xiahou shala is thrown into a rocky emotional state where she comes to rely more on xun yu and realises she does actually have romantic feelings for him. however, she doesn’t confess until after lü bu’s death in 199, as xiapi put both her and xun yu in a vulnerable state that led to her getting drunk and confessing. following her confession, the two are openly romantic with one another, though like most couples, they’re more reserved around others than they are in private.xiahou shala enjoys teasing and flustering xun yu, who learns to accept it and secretly comes to enjoy it. their time spent together tends to involve discussing literature, poetry, and military strategy; xun yu teaching xiahou shala archery (which xiahou dun didn’t train her in); and going on walks, especially in their gardens or in the city. they also enjoy spending time doing their own separate activities while in the same room (ex xiahou shala might be doing embroidery while xun yu is reading).regarding politics, it should be noted that while xiahou shala very much wants the xiahou and cao clans to prosper, and does not actively work against them, she’s against her clan usurping the throne. the fact that xun yu both supports and works against the cao clan is a silent point of contention in his and xiahou shala’s relationship, and both make an effort to not bring it up, with xun yu only telling his wife about (and asking for her aid in) his strategies that support the cao clan.along with resenting cao cao, cao shala also comes to resent cao zhi and cao pi because of the friction that the cao succession crisis caused within the cao-xiahou clans, and stops communicating with either one for quite a while. despite cao zhi being her favourite cousin, she supports cao pi’s succession of cao cao, because she saw how the yuan clan was destroyed by favouring the younger son, and she believes that if cao cao follows tradition and allows cao pi to succeed him, there will be much less room for debate and in-fighting than if he chooses cao zhi.while lady tang is xun yu's historical wife, she has not been mentioned in RoT, so in my yumeverse, xiahou shala is xun yu's one and only wife. they find themselves unable to conceive, and xun yu refuses to take another wife or a concubine/consort, much to xun gun's frustration, as xun yu is the eldest son (xun yu’s brothers don’t exist in RoT, but i’ve been playing around with including them in my yumeverse). as such, xun yu's historical son, xun yun (who is confirmed to exist in RoT, but who hasn’t been seen) is their foster son. xun yun is the child of one of shala’s childhood friends, orphaned after both parents succumbed to illness. with the friend’s parents and parents-in-law both being too old to continue caring for him, they amicably give him up to xun yu and shala.xiahou shala is amicable towards most of the key players in the cao camp, with a couple of notable exceptions. she dislikes sima yi from the get-go, not believing that he truly supports the cao clan (ironically though, she gets along very well with shan wuling because they both contrast societal norms to a certain degree). sima yi is sworn to secrecy about the nature of xun yu's death by cao cao, cao xiu, and cao zhen, but he nonetheless tells xiahou shala, seeing it as his final favour to xun yu. this leads to xiahou shala disliking him less, but she still never fully trusts him, which, given what the sima family goes on to do, is the right choice.her early relationship with jia xu and guo jia is strained because, even before marrying xun yu, she believes that the most peaceful and amicable approach that will also bring results is the approach that should be taken in any situation. when formally introduced to them by xun yu, her opinions change a bit. she gets along well with guo jia because they both enjoy teasing xun yu, and she warms up to him even more after his death because she sees how xun yu, the person she loves the most, talks about him. while she isn’t present at guo jia’s death, xun yu tells her much of what he said as guo jia died, which is what changes her mind about him. she never warms up to jia xu, though, especially because of his role in cao ang’s death. but, knowing how much xun yu cares about him, she’s courteous and polite towards him.most significantly, xiahou shala distrusts yang xiu and hates that he’s her favourite cousin’s closest friend and most trusted advisor. yang xiu also dislikes her, because he thinks her desire to see cao pi inherit the throne will make cao zhi soft and ambitionless. he also thinks that xiahou shala shouldn’t have an opinion on the succession crisis to begin with, given that she’s a woman, and one who’s been married off to boot. they are typically curt and a little snippy towards one another, though neither will stoop to obvious insults, especially since they only ever see each other in public places where they can’t afford to be outright rude. cao zhi is aware of their mutual dislike towards one another, but tries to ignore it on the rare occasion that the two come face to face.after xun yu's death, xiahou shala quietly keeps contact with cao zhi as her favourite cousin and xiahou dun as her father, but fully cuts contact with cao cao, because she believes that he could have saved xun yu by being more decisive and keeping hold over cao pi; with cao pi, because of his call for xun yu's execution following the bronze bird terrace speech; and with cao xiu and cao zhen, because they moved xun yu's corpse to the battlefield to save face for the cao clan (and tried to hide it from her). knowing that liu bei is attempting to restore his own branch of the han dynasty, she considers fleeing to shu, despite xun yu having not chosen to support him years ago, but decides against it in favour of living out the rest of her days in quiet peace. she keeps extensive records of xun yu's writings (letters, strategies, etc) and of his contributions to both the cao camp and the han dynasty. this includes meeting with people who knew xun yu as a child, like zhong yao, and sending letters to those in other kingdoms that she can't meet with directly, like the remaining geniuses, to learn more about his childhood, teenage years, and early adulthood before she knew him. she also secretly preserves xun yu's correspondences that everyone else thought he had burned to protect other loyalists. however, she burns them shortly before her own death, even though cao-wei has long since been established and the sima family has even started to gain more power within the new dynasty.in my yumeverse, i see both xiahou shala and xun yu as cis and bisexual. their marriage is fully monogamous and neither has a partner of either the same or the opposite sex.
